I have had a constant battle with my home phone, and I have to admit that the phone has won. I was one of the first people to sign up for the "Do Not Call" list, and I have taken the time to be removed from "curtesey calls" our credit cards and other services automaticaly sign us up for, but I still get calls at all hours of the day. I work a lot at nights, and I hate being woken up after 4 hours sleep about a pleasure vacation in Northern California, all I have to do is enjoy a 4 hour presentation on a time share and it's an all expense weekend at the facility...
So I bought $20.00 phones at Radio Shack that all have an On/Off switch on the phone's ringer. I can now turn my phone off and it does not disturb my sleep, favorite TV shows, or other times I want to be left alone. It was a simple but very effective solution, and I can leave the ringer on anytime I'm expecting an important call.
